Preschool enrolments close Friday

Preschool enrolments for Latrobe City's twenty-three preschools close on Friday 10 August 2001

By Latrobe City Council - 6th August 2001 - Back to News

Preschool enrolments for Latrobe City's twenty-three preschools close on Friday 10 August 2001 and Latrobe City Deputy Mayor, Councillor Tony Hanning, has said the enrolment message was particularly important in rural areas where enrolments were down.

"In urban areas, enrolments to date are more-or-less on a par with last year. However, enrolments in rural areas are down, reflecting the demographic change we anticipated, after analysing data from our Maternal and Child Health Service collected over the past few years," Cr Hanning said.

In essence, today’s infants receiving care from the Maternal and Child Health nurses, become tomorrow’s preschoolers, so we have a fair idea of any demographic changes, which help us predict preschool needs. Even so, we feel there are a still a considerable number of outstanding enrolments to come from these areas and urge parents to get in before Friday’s deadline," Cr Hanning said.

"Children enrolled on or before Friday will be considered for places on the basis of parent preference then random draw, not the date of applications. Enrolments received after this time will be considered as late enrolments.

"If your child is a late enrolment it doesn’t mean that your child will miss out on preschool, however it may mean that you are unable to be placed in the centre of your choice. Your child will need to turn four years of age before April 30, 2002 to be eligible for enrolment in a Latrobe City preschool in 2002," Cr Hanning added.

Preschool Unit Leader, Jill Sargent, said that enrolment forms were available from Latrobe's Citizen Service Centres in Moe, Morwell or Traralgon, or from local preschools. "Once parents have an enrolment form, they can enrol, either in person at a Citizen Service Centre, or by mail," Ms Sargent said.

"If you are enrolling in person, please bring your child’s proof of age with you (eg Health Centre Book, copy of Birth Certificate etc). If enrolling by mail, post your form with a copy (not the original) of the child’s proof of age to: Preschool Placement Officer, Latrobe City, PO Box 345, Traralgon 3844.

"Please note that preschool staff are unable to take enrolments as this takes time; time they are employed to spend with the children attending their preschool in 2001," Ms Sargent added.

Councillor Hanning said that Council was anxious to ensure that as many children as possible benefit from the preschool experience. "We are extremely fortunate that we have excellent pre-school teachers and a society that cares about the welfare and future wellbeing of its youngest citizens," Cr Hanning said.

"All children are encouraged to enrol into the preschool program and they will have equal access to preschool irrespective of their abilities and disabilities. Children are encouraged to develop to their full potential through the early childhood teacher’s careful planning of the preschool program.

"Preschool helps children become more aware of the world around them, and promotes language development, and intellectual, physical and emotional skills. It helps to build confidence and social skills and provides an opportunity for each child to develop in a safe and nurturing environment," Cr Hanning said.
