Stiletto Sisters strut into spring

After a short break to avoid the worst of the winter chills, the Café Concert Series is hotting up again with the Stiletto Sisters set to strut their stuff on stage on at Tyers on Sunday 3 September.

By Latrobe City Council - 17th August 2006 - Back to News

Latrobe City’s performing arts and venues co-ordinator, Kathleen Roberts said that the Stiletto Sisters were a dynamic and vibrant trio featuring the sparkling eyes and ready smiles of Hope Csutoros on violin, Judy Gunson on piano accordion, and double bassist Jo To.

"Gypsy melodies, seductive tango rhythms and sensuous songs from Europe and Latin America are their staple - this is music to swoon by.

"Hope Csutoros and Judy Gunson have previously performed at a Café Concert series as part of music group Cosmo Cosmolino. Five years ago, Hope and Judy formed the Stiletto Sisters as an adjunct to Cosmo Cosmolino to accommodate their own desire to perform the more famous pieces of music from the Hungarian, Gypsy, Tango and Jewish traditions," Ms Roberts explained.

"Since then, the Stiletto Sisters have performed regularly to packed houses in their home town of Melbourne. They have toured to the prestigious Four Winds Festival in Bermagui, as well as to Sydney and Adelaide, including performances at the famous Spiegeltent," Ms Roberts added.

Hope Csutoros’ background is steeped in Hungarian culture. She was born in Australia, of Hungarian parents. Both parents were folk dancers and her grandmother played piano. Hope has vivid memories of listening to gypsy music records that her dad would play at home. From the tender age of three Hope was involved in the variety style shows that the local Hungarian community would stage to celebrate occasions such as Christmas, Easter and Mothers Day. Hope went on to study at the Victorian College of The Arts and at the Budapest Franz Lizst Academy of Music in Hungary. She has toured extensively in Europe, the UK, Singapore and Japan with a variety of groups. Her performing credits include projects as diverse as the State Orchestra of Victoria, The Phantom of the Opera orchestra, inspired contemporary pop group My Friend The Chocolate Cake, Cosmo Cosmolino, and the Deflocked String Quartet. She has also recorded with popular artists including Midnight Oil and Deborah Conway.

Judy Gunson was the influence for the inclusion of more songs into the Stiletto Sisters repertoire. Her singing career began as a chorister and choir soloist for six years with Melbourne’s renowned Astra Choir. More recently she has developed as a solo performer who is comfortable with repertoires as diverse as classical, country, cabaret and jazz. Judy studied the piano and completed her music degree at Latrobe University. She worked for many years as performer and composer with a number of acts, particularly the celebrated Melbourne theatre group Anthill Theatre. Judy has toured extensively in Australia and played at festivals in Latin America, Europe and Asia with the Melbourne’s acclaimed Chamber Made Opera Company.

Jo To is the bassist in this trio. She is a graduate of Box Hill TAFE and the Victorian College of the Arts where she received the Frances Quinn Arts Encouragement Award in 2000. She has developed name for herself as a versatile and confident performer and has a vast amount of experience and performance credits to her name, including: Ray Charles, Renee Geyer, Australian Pops Orchestra, Disney's The Lion King, James Morrison, Bill Watrous, Tony Gould, Rhonda Burchmore, and Todd McKenney.

Ms Roberts said that with so much talent and energy packed into this gypsy style trio, the show was guaranteed to raise your spirits and put a smile on your face.

"The Stiletto Sisters may be the tonic you didn’t even know you needed!" Ms Roberts concluded.

The Stiletto Sisters will be performing live as part of Latrobe City’s Café Concert Series at Tyers Hall, Tyers at 7.30pm on Sunday 3 September 2006, with assistance from Arts Victoria.
