Exhibition Focuses On Industrial Materials

Currently on display at Latrobe Regional Gallery is a fascinating exhibition of sculptures made from the everyday materials of industrial nylon and rubber rope.

Gallery Director, Louise Tegart, said that the resulting art was a collision of old world methods and new world sensitivities.

"The exhibition, ‘Variations in A Serious Black Dress’ is by Sydney-based Spanish-Australian artist Dani Marti. Visually commanding, the 13 black wall works and three floor works appear like gigantic fabric swatches. On closer inspection it can be seen that each artwork is made from thick industrial ropes which have been hand woven into rhythmic abstract patterns and stretched over wooden frames," Ms Tegart said.

"Marti has developed a near-obsessional fixation with the woven rope, combining his lifelong enthusiasm for weaving with a commitment to design. He regularly freights in huge quantities of custom made rope, which he imports from Spain.

"The dramatic black sculptures have been inspired by fabrics worn by women in the paintings of Spanish master painters such as Goya and Velazquez, and the floor pieces reference the armour worn by men in similar artworks," Ms Tegart concluded.

The exhibition has been curated by Canberra Contemporary Art Space and is toured by Museums and Galleries NSW. The exhibition continues until 11 December.

The Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm, and on weekends 11am to 4pm. The gallery is closed public holidays. For further information about exhibitions at the gallery, please telephone 5128 5700.
