Latrobe City’s Senior Citizen of the Year announced

Morwell resident Dorothy Fogarty was announced as Latrobe City’s Senior Citizen 2005 at a special presentation in Victory Park, Traralgon, marking the commencement of the Victorian Seniors Festival.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed said that Ms Fogarty was awarded the title for her service to the community.

"Dorothy is a very busy lady. She is currently vice-president of the Morwell East Senior Citizens Club, treasurer of the Country Women’s Association and a member of the Morwell Croquet Club, the Morwell Historical Society and the Central Gippsland Retired Persons Association. Dorothy is also heavily involved with her church and its activities, even managing to attend the morning service before her presentation," Cr Lougheed explained.

"Growing up in Morwell, Dorothy became involved in the community from an early age. She was a teacher for 38 years, helped to found Lifeline Gippsland and the Parents Without Partners organisation in the area, as well as joining the Alzheimers Society and serving on the Victorian Consumer Forum for the Aged," Cr Lougheed said.

Ms Fogarty knew nothing of her nomination and was surprised with the news that she had won the award when her family told her three weeks ago.

"I was rather overcome but very proud to receive the honour," Ms Fogarty added.
