The draft budget, announced at the 20 May Council Meeting recommends a modest overall increase in rates and charges of one-per-cent above inflation for the coming financial year. This will help the Council continue its significant programme of investment geared at enhancing Shire services and facilities. Taking on board feedback from the Shire’s community, the budget recognises the need to support economic development, to maintain infrastructure and invest in the Shire’s future. It will also help the Council to further reduce its debt, which is projected to fall to $15 million by the end of June next year, from a high of $23 million in 2000. The recommended overall increase in rates and charges of 4.6% (1% above the inflation rate of 3.6%) includes a $6 increase in the municipal charge (from $130 to $136) and a $12 rise in garbage charges (from $136 to $148). This would raise $22.8 million towards delivering services to the community. Taking account of other financial contributions (such as grants, fees and charges), as well as costs (ie, interest, materials and staff costs), the Shire is looking at a total budget for the coming financial year of $43.7 million. Some $15 million will go towards the Council’s capital investment programme, with a total of $39 million being channelled in this direction over the current and next two years. Written submissions on the budget and differential rates need lodged with the Council by close of business onSource: www.gippsland.com Published by: news@gippsland.com Related Articles
