Round 14 Baseball: Redsox convincing winnersThe Edison Mission Energy Latrobe Valley Baseball Association continued on Sunday with round fourteen games By Latrobe Valley Baseball Association - 25th July 2001 - Back to News The Edison Mission Energy Latrobe Valley Baseball Association continued on Sunday with round fourteen games. In pivotal game to the final standing’s, the Traralgon Redsox battled the Churchill Braves in ideal conditions for baseball. The Traralgon Baseball Club continued its winning recent form and recorded four wins and a draw for the day.
In the A grade game, Churchill batted first, and quickly got on base. Their first four batters had hits, but some fine fielding limited the Braves from converting bases held to runs on the board. The Redsox had a setback at the start of their batting dig with their first two batters going out. A two-down rally led by Davis Long, saw seven safe hits, and five runs cross the plate. Constant pressure allowed Churchill to score only one more run for the remainder of game. Traralgon responded adding runs steadily, before amassing an amazing ten runs in their last batting dig after taking advantage of errors in the field. The Redsox who have proven extremely tough to beat at home won convincingly 22-2. Davis Long, Owen Godenzi, Ross Brooker and Brett Sharp each had two singles and a double base hit. Mark Seeber and Peter McLean had two singles; John Kus had a double, and Leon Robinson and Luke Hornstra both had a single base hit. The top performers for the Redsox were Davis Long, Owen Godenzi and Mark Seeber.
The B grade game saw Traralgon off to a good start due to good fielding, stranding two runners on base without scoring. The Redsox batted through eleven batters, scoring six runs in the second dig to set up victory. Churchill was restricted to two runs, while Traralgon added another three in their third dig. A highlight of the game was the great play at home plate. Michael McKenna was rock solid as an imposing Tim Cranwell charged home for the run. McKenna was able to hold onto the ball to make the out despite being bowled over. Hits for the Redsox went to Stephen O’Callaghan who had a double; Andrew McConville, Don Saunders and Jude Power each had a single. Better players were McConville, O’Callaghan and Power in the 10-2 victory.
Traralgon dominated the C grade contest from the outset, never allowing the Braves to gain any momentum. Graeme Estcourt and Wells Humphrey both hit impressive home runs. Wells was one hit short of a cycle. David Griffiths, Scott Pollerd and Chris Griffiths each had a single base hit, Rowan Patten and Steve O’Callaghan each had two singles, Cary Humphrey had a double and Peter Hornstra had three singles. Wells Humphrey had a home run, a double and two singles, and Graeme Estcourt had a home run and three singles. The final score was 14-0 in favour of Traralgon.
Traralgon under 18’s had an impressive win, 15-4. Solid contributors being Cary Humphrey, Luke Hornstra and Steven Cox. In the under 14’s all players played extremely well against ladder leading Churchill. Jarryd Wilhelme had two hits, and Matt McLean and Brendan Solomon each had one hit. The game was tight all day and the teams could not be separated at the end of play drawing, 7-7. Traralgon’s fill in players of Erin McLean and Fern Estcourt performed well under pressure. There were no under 12 games played due to the championships being held in Bendigo on the weekend.
The action continues this Sunday in the Edison Mission Energy Latrobe Valley Baseball Association with round fifteen games. Morwell hosts Yarram, Moe/Newborough battles Traralgon and the Sale Rangers travel to Churchill to take on the Braves. The public is welcome.
