Plan identifies need for sport and recreation facilitiesRead about the current situation and future direction of sport and recreation as adopted by the Bass Coast Shire Council. By news@gippsland - 22nd April 2016 - Back to News A plan to help guide the future of sport and active recreation provision was adopted by Bass Coast Shire Council at this week’s meeting.
The Bass Coast Sports and Active Recreation Needs Assessment (SARNA) aims to provide Council with the current situation and a future direction for sport and recreation, as well as assist Council to plan for the needs of the community and provide the strategic direction required to make successful grant applications.
The report was developed throughout 2015 with extensive community consultation and analysis, and also provides a comparison benchmarking facility provision of Bass Coast with four other rural councils. Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Jordan Crugnale, said participation rates for most sports in Bass Coast are well below state averages with poor quality and undersized facilities identified as a key barrier to growth. "Popular sports such as basketball, indoor netball and soccer have no facilities within the Shire that meet miniumum safety standards. This plan sets out the planning and facility development priorities which support the development of these facilities," Cr Crugnale said. "It also equips Council to make informed decisions about which sport and active recreation areas it should be focussing its limited resources on in the future, and provides the detailed background data required to help inform Council’s capital works program." Feedback received from both individuals and clubs within the community commented that there is an immediate need to improve facilities within the Shire, with these comments incorporated into the adopted plan. The adopted SARNA can be found on Council’s website at www.basscoast.vic.gov.au/sarna.
