Call For Nominations For Access & InclusionEach day, people with disability face a range of challenges and issues far different to those encountered by most people. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 24th April 2009 - Back to News If you are interested in issues that affect people with disability or have direct experience that could provide useful insights and advice, you may like to nominate for a position on the Bass Coast Access and Inclusion Committee.
Nominations for the next two year term of the Committee close on 8 May 2009.
Bass Coast Shire Council’s RuralAccess Worker, Cathy Giliam, said the Committee provided information and advice to help improve access for people living, working, studying in or visiting Bass Coast.
"The Committee meets every two months and discusses issues raised by Committee members or ones that are referred to the Committee for discussion," explained Ms Giliam.
"Council can also refer to the Committee policies or strategies which impact on people with disability in Bass Coast.
"Their advice helps Council to promote and improve access wherever possible in a range of areas."
The Access and Inclusion Committee has had input into a number of recent Council projects.
"We are currently undertaking a review of accessible parking bays in the CBD’s of Bass Coast’s major towns" said Ms Giliam.
"This project is a result of the issue being raised at the Access and Inclusion Committee.
"Another example is the Footpath Trading Policy which was referred to the Committee for discussion and was supported wholeheartedly by Committee members.
"This policy helps people of all abilities by providing a consistent approach to footpath trading and thereby reducing clutter."
The Committee is made up of six community representatives, three organisational representatives and a mix of Council staff and councillors. Cr Smith is the current chair of the Committee.
Committee members volunteer their time but may be offered training and conference opportunities as they arise. Meetings are held every two months and include a light lunch.
Nominations for all positions must be received by the 8 May 2009. The first meeting of the new committee will be held in mid June. Nomination forms are available on Council’s website (www.basscoast.vic.gov.au) or you can contact Cathy Giliam for more information.
"The previous Committee members have proved an invaluable resource for Council and people with disability in Bass Coast and we thank them for their input," said Ms Giliam.
"Our current members are welcome to apply again."
