Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 December 2010.

Latrobe City’s performing arts and venues coordinator, Kathleen Roberts, said that the workshop would be facilitated by Melbourne-based performance group ‘Born in a Taxi’ and will offer young people the chance to get creative.

"The philosophy behind the workshop is to encourage participants to use their own individual flair to communicate. They will learn to tell a story through movement, expression, gesture, or shape, but no words.

"The workshop will offer the opportunity to tap into personal movement creativity, expression and spontaneity and to inspire new insight into creating and performing with an ensemble, developing theatrical clarity and personal performance style and confidence," Ms Roberts said.

"Playful and comprehensive, the workshops will be highly physical and attend in equal measure to dance and the theatre of performance. Participants should wear comfortable clothes and bring their own lunch and water," Ms Roberts concluded.

‘Born In A Taxi’ is an independent physical theatre ensemble that has been creating dance, physical and visual theatre for over 20 years and has continued to practise, develop, create and perform their own original work. Improvisation is at the heart of their process and performances.

Since 1989 they have produced many unique and successful works in theatres, on the street, at arts festivals, in galleries, stadiums, rubbish bins and all manner of corporate venues. In any one year, the company produces original works for arts festivals, street theatre festivals, performance seasons and corporate events, along with their ongoing skill sharing, teaching and workshops. They have established a respected name locally, nationally and internationally for contemporary and at times eccentric works accessible to a wide and culturally diverse audience.

The workshop will take place at the Latrobe Performing Arts Centre, Traralgon on Saturday 4 December and Sunday 5 December from 10 am to 4 pm. The cost is $33 per person. BYO lunch and water (the lunch break will be short and participants will be required to remain at the performance venue.)

To book your place for this workshop, call the Latrobe Performing Arts Box Office on 5176 3559. Places are strictly limited and bookings are essential.
