Urgent Repairs For Inverloch Beach

Bass Coast Shire Council has undertaken urgent work to ensure the safety of Inverloch Beach.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 24th October 2008 - Back to News

Excavation machinery was brought in to collapse a sand cliff which posed a potential public risk in a highly used part of the Inverloch Foreshore.

Council’s Coast and Bushland Management Officer, Derek Hibbert, said the sand cliff was created by natural erosion.

"A recent storm surge excerbated the erosion and the cliff posed a number of safety risks," explained Mr Hibbert.

"Children often dig caves into sand cliffs and there is a real danger of the cliff collapsing and burying them under sand and debris.

"There was also a concern that people would jump off the top of the cliff into the water," continued Mr Hibbert.

"At Inverloch, the channel has moved landward and is now located so close to the shoreline that anyone jumping in could potentially end up in deep, fast moving water."

The area of concern on the Foreshore Reserve was located between The Glade and the South Gippsland Yacht Club compound.

The excavation work took place at low tide first thing on Friday morning, removing sand from the base of the cliff.

"Doing this caused the cliff to slump which left a gradual slope, rather than a vertical drop," Mr Hibbert explained.

"The excavation has basically sped up a process that would naturally occur over a longer period of time.

"Wherever possible, we try to allow natural processes to operate uninterrupted on our coastal reserves," continued Mr Hibbert.

"However, in this situation we had to intervene to ensure the safety of anyone using this very popular beach.

"By acting early we are able to take a soft approach to the situation. Wherever possible, we want to avoid heavy engineering alternatives, such as constructing rock walls to protect the shore from wave erosion."
