Churchill United Service Station Finally Comes Down

Demolition works for old United service station in Churchill starts to roll.

By Portal Admin - 2nd December 2019 - Back to News

Member for Morwell Russell Northe today said he was thrilled that the old United service station in Churchill was finally being demolished today.

The derelict building on the gateway to Churchill had for years caused consternation to Churchill residents and it is a massive relief that demolition works are now actually happening.

"I couldn’t be more pleased that the building is currently being demolished, and this follows countless complaints that I received from the Churchill community over many years" said Mr Northe.

Last year Mr Northe instigated a petition that gained close to 2000 signatures requesting that United Petroleum to remove the derelict buildings on site.

And just recently another letter writing exercise to United Petroleum had commenced within the Churchill community.

Mr Northe was previously advised by United Petroleum that the said buildings would be demolished but a timeframe for the scheduled works were not provided.

"In recent days and upon further contact with various persons we became aware that works were imminent but it wasn’t until we saw works commencing this morning that we could believe this was actually happening." Mr Northe said.

Churchill people are proud people and they should not have been subject to this eyesore on their doorstep for years, but today we will celebrate a win for the town.

"There are still too many similar eyesore buildings that exist across Latrobe City and greater powers are needed for Councils to take enforceable action against derelict property owners." said Mr Northe

"That is why I have again written to the Minister for Local Government seeking his support to ensure that buildings that are unused and eyesores are dealt with appropriately." Mr Northe added.
