By news@gippsland - 10th July 2025 - Back to News As we approach National Diabetes Week it's the perfect time to educate ourselves on the growing impact of diabetes in our community and what can be done to improve our health outcomes. Diabetes is now one of the leading drivers of serious health issues across eastern Victoria, behind only cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Diabetes impacts families, communities, and our healthcare system. Despite its growing prevalence, three out of four Australians still underestimate how widespread diabetes is. This year's National Diabetes Week theme "Check today for a healthier tomorrow" is a reminder to all of us to prioritise health checks. Whether it's checking your risk, booking a GP appointment, or reviewing your annual cycle of care, every step matters. Act against diabetesEarly detection and effective management of diabetes can prevent life-altering complications. That's why organisations like Diabetes Victoria are urging people to act, not just during Diabetes Week, but year round. Recently Diabetes Victoria attended state parliament to raise awareness and help MPs learn more about its health impacts, detection and treatment. Raising awareness is key to making a difference. By talking about diabetes, encouraging regular checks, and supporting those affected, we can all play a part in reducing the toll of this growing health issue.
