By Wellington Shire Council - 3rd November 2004 - Back to News

Following the recent announcement by the Minister for the Commonwealth Games Justin Madden, the council will be working with the shire community on initiatives to foster an ongoing cultural exchange with Ghana and its participating athletes in the lead up to this highly prestigious sporting event.

Wellington will be establishing a Getting Involved committee shortly - with members comprising a broad cross-section of local representatives - to help coordinate ideas and activities for residents of all ages across the shire to celebrate the Games and the Ghana connection.

Ghana covers an area of nearly 240,000 sq km and has a population approaching 20 million people. The first nation in sub-Saharan Africa to gain its independence (in 1957) its industries include mining, lumbering, light manufacturing, aluminium smelting and food processing, while its key exports are gold, timber and cocoa.

Said Wellington’s Mayor Jeff Amos: "We’re delighted to be teaming up with Ghana for the Games. We look forward to developing close links with the country and its athletes over the next 18 months and will be exploring opportunities to include their team in locally organised celebrations. This is something that the whole community has the chance to get involved with, and offers the potential for some exciting and imaginative initiatives."
