‘Barmaids’ come to townThe hilarious comedy ‘Barmaids’ by Australian playwright Katherine Thomson, will be staged this month at the Performing Arts Centre in Traralgon on Tuesday 9 August at 8pm. By Latrobe City Council - 2nd August 2005 - Back to News Performing Arts and Venues Coordinator, Kathleen Roberts, said Barmaids is the story of two mature barmaids who work at ‘The Arms Hotel’ in an Australian port town.
"New Management at the pub puts the barmaids’ jobs in jeopardy, as they see a new breed of karaoke-singing, topless barmaids moving in on their territory. Through this avenue the play looks at the challenges women face everyday in terms of relationships, love, ageing and being valued for their work," Ms Roberts explained.
Barmaids stars Genevieve Picot, (Proof, MDA, True Love and Chaos) as Val, and Valerie Bader (Come In Spinner, Cabaret) as Nancy.
"Together they are two experienced, territorial, straight-talking and truly Australian barmaids who reveal their loves, desires and struggles as it becomes clear why their regulars drop in at the same time each day for the same drinks and the same conversation. They keep them entertained, but make sure they’ve got them exactly where they want them," Ms Roberts said.
"These two actresses work so well together you would swear that pulling beer was their real job," Ms Roberts added.
