Carnival to kick start Rally in the ValleyA community carnival will kick start celebrations for the one-day Rally in the Valley extravaganza. By Latrobe City Council - 6th April 2001 - Back to News A community carnival, featuring rally cars, in front of the Latrobe City Offices in Kay Street Traralgon will kick start celebrations for the one-day Rally in the Valley extravaganza. The carnival will get under way at 10am on Saturday 7 April heralding the start to day-long celebrations in the City. The festive spirit of the carnival which will feature music, a range of children’s entertainment and food sits well with the tradition of thrilling spectator entertainment, the hallmark of this annual event.
This year’s WIN TV Rally in the Valley has taken on a new one-day format to cater more specifically to visitor and spectator needs. The event will also be staged at a new venue, the Loy Yang Overburden, offering a thrilling visual spectacular. The very best racing crews in the state will compete at speeds in excess of 200km per hour. Spectators have been urged to watch as they tear up tear up the Overburden and then witness the mind-blowing excitement as they continue to race day and night through the forests around Traralgon.
Cars will assemble at the Council offices in Kay Street, Traralgon at approximately 10am and will head towards the Overburden between 10.30am and 11.30am. Latrobe City Mayor, Cr Brendan Jenkins, will officially open the race waving the official flag to signal the start of the event.
As drivers head for the Overburden, the community carnival will maintain the adrenaline momentum until the early afternoon with music and all round children’s entertainment.
Latrobe City Mayor, Cr Brendan Jenkins urged Latrobe citizens to take advantage of the opportunity to see the cars, talk to the drivers and to enjoy the entertainment provided in Kay Street.
"This is a terrific annual event for Latrobe City. It brings valuable positive exposure to the region and provides Latrobe citizens with first-hand experience of a great racing tradition. I urge all citizens and visitors to the region to join in the community festivities in front of the Council offices on Saturday 7 April," Cr Jenkins said.
Janiene Ayre, Major Event Development Officer for Latrobe City said the opportunity to unite a major event with Latrobe’s major tourism asset - the power industry, gave the region an added advantage over others.
"A terrific working relationship has been built up over the years and the Rally in the Valley event showcases Loy Yang Power, the Mine and our fantastic region," Ms Ayre said.
An Information booklet which includes an entry ticket to the Loy Yang overburden, and information about the drivers and where the event stages will be held, will be available from Friday 6 April. The booklets which cost $2, are available from the Latrobe Visitor Information Centre, The Old Church Princes Highway Traralgon; the Traralgon Showgrounds, and Autobarn Traralgon. They will also be on sale at the carnival on the Saturday morning in Kay Street, and at the overburden site at Loy Yang.
The Overburden rally site will be easily found by following signs from the Princes Highway.
