Good attendance at trusts and grants forum

Approximately 140 community group representatives attended a Charitable Trusts and Government Grants Information Forum held in Morwell recently.

By Latrobe City Council - 25th June 2003 - Back to News

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss, said that the session, which was organised by Latrobe City Council’s Community Development Strategy team, provided community groups with information on how to better access the trusts and grants available to them.

"The session was offered in response to an assessment conducted by Council of community groups needs for training and networking opportunities. The attendees were informed of the services and assistance available through Philanthropy Australia; tips and hints on writing grant submissions, and funding and grant opportunities through the RACV Foundation and VicHealth," Cr Middlemiss said.

Delivered by Kerry Irwin from Gippsport, Sue Roff from the RACV Foundation and Vanessa Meachen from Philanthropy Australia, the speakers explained the funding programs available through their organisations as well giving community groups information on the ‘dos and don’ts’ of writing and submitting grant applications.

Cr Middlemiss said that following on from this session, three more Community Group Information Forums had been organised for 2003.

"The topics to be covered at future forums will range from sponsorship and fundraising ideas to recruiting volunteers and committee members as well as updating community groups insurance and risk management issues," Cr Middlemiss explained.

Latrobe City’s Coordinator Latrobe Community Service Centre, Teresa Pugliese said that the upcoming sessions will focus on the training needs of community and non-profit organisations within the municipality.

"They will provide community and non-profit groups with an opportunity to learn about areas that impact on their day-to-day operations. The forums are also aiming to strengthen and enhance the level of interaction between Council and community and non-profit organisations," Ms Pugliese said.

Cr Middlemiss added that it was important that Community Groups continued to support the forums.

"The feedback from previous sessions is vital for us to be able to schedule forums on pertinent topics. We are very proud of our community organisations and are working to build on our relationships with them and the level of support for them. These forums are a good way to keep the lines of communication open," Cr Middlemiss concluded.

Forums take place at the Italian/Australian Sporting Club of Gippsland, Princes Highway Morwell. All sessions will be run at night, between 6.30pm and approximately 9pm.

Bookings can be made by contacting Latrobe City Council on telephone 1300 367 700. Questions or further information can be obtained by contacting Teresa Pugliese, Coordinator Latrobe Community Service Centres on telephone 1300 367 700.
