Traffic Concerns In Breed Street Being AddressedAn investigation of the speed and volume of traffic using Breed Street Traralgon, north of Grey Street, is being undertaken by Latrobe City. By Latrobe City - 27th March 2007 - Back to News Latrobe City’s general manager marketing and development, Peter Quigley, said changing traffic use following the construction of housing developments beyond Guntzler Court, and concerns by residents in the Michael, Guntzler and Clift Court areas, meant a review was timely.
"We are currently looking at existing speed limits in the area, the increased volume of traffic using Breed Street; vehicle speeds along Breed Street; safety for vehicles entering Breed Street from adjacent streets and properties; and the safety of pedestrians when crossing Breed Street to the Agnes Brereton Reserve," Mr Quigley explained.
"Part of the ongoing investigation will include undertaking traffic counts at a number of locations along Breed Street. It is expected that the traffic counts will be undertaken during April/May."
Mr Quigley said that council has already noted that there is confusion regarding the speed limit along this part of Breed Street and along Bradman Boulevard. "This is due to there currently being 50 km/h speed limit signs in Breed Street just north of Grey Street for north bound traffic and 60 km/h speed limit signs in Bradman Boulevard for east bound traffic. Council officers are working to ensure that the developer of the new estate completes the installation of new speed limit signage along this route as soon as possible. VicRoads have approved a 60 km/h speed limit for along Breed Street and Bradman Boulevard."
Mr Quigley said issues relating to sight distance for vehicles leaving Guntzler Court have also already been investigated. "From an onsite inspection of the area, sight distance to the north along Breed Street for a vehicle about to leave Guntzler Court was found to be 25% more than that required for a speed limit of 60 km/h under current Austroads guidelines.
"There are however some street trees near the bend in Breed Street with a significant amount of suckers and shoots growing around the lower part of the trees that have created a visual block along part of the road. Arrangements have been made to clear this growth from around the trees," Mr Quigley said.
Mr Quigley added that Latrobe City is about to undertake the next stage of road works along Breed Street between Anderson Street and Grey Street.
"The City’s works include minor widening and the construction of indented parking along the east side of the road. These works are currently expected to be completed within the next two months," Mr Quigley explained.
"Temporary painted islands and line marking will also be placed to create indented parking along the west side of Breed Street from Grey Street to just north of Guntzler Court. Further permanent works to replace the painted islands along the west side are proposed at a later date.
"The effect of these works will be to create improved safety for vehicles and pedestrians in the area by restricting traffic movement along the street to the centre of the road and will increase the sight distance along the street for vehicles entering Breed Street from intersecting streets and adjacent properties," Mr Quigley concluded.
