Holiday House Registration Open Holiday home owners are being urged to register their houses before 31 March, in line with changes to the Public Health and Wellbeing Act. By Bass Coast - 13th January 2012 - Back to News Bass Coast Shire Council’s Environmental Health Team Leader, Alex Waldron, said 2012 registrations needed to be lodged by the end of March. Registration forms and a management plan template are now on Council’s website.
"Changes to the Public Health and Wellbeing Act 2008 have impacted some holiday home owners in Bass Coast," explained Mrs Waldron.
"Holiday rental properties able to accommodate six or more people are now required to register with Council.
"The new regulations apply even if the property is used for paid accommodation for limited periods such has peak holiday times or an occasional weekend.
"To register a property, holiday home owners need to fill in a Holiday House Registration Form, pay an annual registration fee; and provide a basic floor plan of the property," Mrs Waldron continued.
"The registration fee varies depending on the number of people that can be accommodated on the premises. The basic fee of $251 covers a property able to cater for between 6 and fifteen people.
"Before the registration can be completed an Environmental Health officer needs to assess the plans. An annual inspection will be undertaken to confirm the details are accurate and the holiday house meets a predetermined standard."
A 50 percent discount on fees is available for houses that are let under a Council endorsed management plan. To assist holiday home owners, Council has developed a template management plan in consultation with a working group of local real estate agents.
"We wanted to be sure that the management plan was in line with industry standards and took into account the appropriate management of rubbish and nuisance issues, such as excessive noise and unruly parties," Mrs Waldron said.
"It also means that if holiday home owners use an agent to manage all their bookings, they may be able to use their existing management plan to claim the discounted registration fee."
Registered properties will receive a certificate of registration that must be displayed at the property.
"Properties being registered will give visitors to Bass Coast added protection and peace of mind knowing that registered premises meet the required standards.
"This also means that overcrowding problems, that have had such an impact on local residents in past years, will be more easily managed in the future," said Mrs Waldron.
"I encourage holiday home owners to talk to the Environmental Health team for information and assistance if they are having any difficulty understanding the registration process or if the regulations apply to their property."
The rental holiday house information pack and a frequently asked questions information sheet is available on Council website at www.basscoast.vic.gov.au, or contact the Environmental Health team on 1300 BCOAST (226 278).
