Register At Morwell For The Barry Sheene Tribute RideOver 1000 motorcycles are expected to roar through Morwell on Thursday 15 October with the start of the 7th annual ‘Ride to the GP – a Tribute to Barry Sheene’ event. By Latrobe City Council - 9th October 2009 - Back to News Latrobe City deputy mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan, said that for the first time riders will be able to register in Morwell, saving a long trip to Bairnsdale, where the ride begins.
"Bikes can be registered at the Morwell Recreation Reserve between
10 am and 11 am. Members of the Gippsland Ulysses club will be scrutinising on behalf of the organisers of the ‘Ride to the GP’ event.
"The ride will proceed under police escort from Bairnsdale and there will be a fuel and lunch stop at Morwell Recreation Reserve then continue along the Strzelecki and Bass Highways, via Leongatha and Wonthaggi, to San Remo – the gateway to Phillip Island," Cr O’Callaghan said.
"The entourage is expected to travel along Commercial Road Morwell around 11.30 am and depart at 12.30 pm after a lunch stop at Morwell Recreation reserve, where the Churchill Lions club will cater for the masses.
"On arrival at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, registered riders will conclude with a slow lap of the track, in honour of the much loved legend of motorcycle racing," Cr O’Callaghan said.
Sheene won the World 500cc Motorcycle Championships in 1976 and 1977, and, after he moved to Australia in the late 1980s, became a television motor sport commentator. He died of cancer in March 2003. VIPs on the ride this year include Laura Csortan, Stacy McMahon and Andrew Ward.
Cr O’Callaghan added that the ‘Ride to the GP – a Tribute to Barry Sheene’ has become an important part of the build-up to the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, which is being held at Phillip Island, 16-18 October.
"Having access to registration here in Latrobe City will hopefully enable more riders to join in with this spectacular event. It’s a great sight to witness the thousands of bikes cruise along the route," Cr O’Callaghan concluded.
