Councils Welcome Budget OutcomesCouncillor Tony Hanning, said today that the Network generally supported the outcomes of the State Budget By Latrobe City Council - 21st May 2001 - Back to News Councillor Tony Hanning, Chairperson of the Gippsland Local Government Network, the organisation representing the seven Councils of Gippsland, said today that the Network generally supported the outcomes of the State Budget, released this week.
"We are pleased to see at last that the State Government has a major focus on regional development. Gippsland is well organised to take advantage of these new regional initiatives with strong regional cooperation between bodies such as Gippsland Development and the Network," Cr Hanning said.
"The Gippsland Councils welcome announcements to refurbish the run down public infrastructure, neglected for many years by successive governments. Projects such as the restoration of rail services in Gippsland, upgrading of the Bass Highway, new police stations, educational precincts, and hospital spending in Gippsland are all good news, and are part of the Action Plans of the Network.
"Environmentally, the commitment of $77m over four years for the Snowy River restoration, and $11m for R and D upgrades for agricultural research will strengthen Gippsland's role in Victoria as the leading producer of clean, green agricultural produce," Cr Hanning said.
"However, there is still much to be done. The Network is anxiously waiting for the announcements from the Latrobe Valley Ministerial Task Force for an injection of funds to assist the Valley. We urge the Government not just to re-announce projects already agreed on, but to provide leadership in building better communities by funding new, innovative projects which will assist not only the citizens of the Latrobe Valley but for the benefit of the whole of Gippsland," Cr Hanning concluded.
