Innovation Project at Warragul Internet CaféGippsTAFE Disability Liaison Officer, Sue Lawrence, has set up a "New Learners Program," which involves six people who have a disability to do a short course at GippsTAFE’s On-line Internet Café in Warragul. By GippsTAFE - 2nd October 2003 - Back to News The program was set up through the GippsTALS (Gippsland Teaching and Learning Solutions program) using money from innovation funding that GippsTAFE received for 2003 to adopt new learning methodologies across GippsTAFE, through integration of new learning technologies and flexible delivery.
"The program enables people with disabilities who have previously not been to TAFE to try a program here at the Internet Café," said Ms Lawrence.
Six students come from community programs from the West Gippsland area, and have just begun the course, which runs for six weeks, students attending two days per week.
The computer course, which was coordinated by Ms Lawrence, gives an introduction to computers and teaches internet surfing.
"The course is facilitated by Karen Scott at the Internet Café and there are two support workers from the student’s organisations there for each lesson," said Ms Lawrence.
"The students receive a Certificate of Attendance at the conclusion of the course, and can come back to TAFE to complete a whole computer course if they wish. If this course is successful, we may also run another one in the near future."
GippsTAFE’s Internet Café was established over a year ago with funding from the Commonwealth Government Networking the Nation program to provide public access to the Internet.
The café features state of the art facilities and includes services such as internet browsing, email, CD burning, scanning documents and photos, colour or black and white photograph printing, black and white printing, on-line banking, internet assistance and general computing help.
