Northe: Make Rebates Available To Fire-Affected

Morwell MP Russell Northe has called on the Brumby government to extend the Solar Hot Water and Water Smart Gardens & Homes rebate programs to people rebuilding after the Boolarra and Black Saturday fires.

By Russell Northe - 7th August 2009 - Back to News

"As people attempt to rebuild their homes and their lives I believe this small incentive will make a significant difference to families right across Victoria," Mr Northe said in Parliament last night.

"Currently these schemes prohibit such people from accessing the rebates because the criterion stipulates that the rebates are not applicable to new homes amongst other factors. Given the circumstances however, I believe those who are rebuilding post the fires should be granted access to the programs."

Mr Northe again took opportunity to commend the efforts of local volunteers, businesses, agency and departmental staff in the recovery efforts. He said donations to the Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund had exceeded all expectations and such goodwill was enabling GERF to continue to provide much needed assistance to affected locals.

Whilst GERF were doing an amazing job and Red Cross Appeal and insurance funds were slowly trickling through, Mr Northe said many people were struggling with the escalating costs of rebuilding as well as the time required to navigate red tape and deal with builders, planners and council.

"I know of many small business people who have been working incredible hours to ensure they are able to make a living in the first instance while attempting to rebuild their homes," he said.

The Member for Morwell said the government should not overlook opportunities to open up existing initiatives such as the Solar Hot Water and Water Smart Gardens & Homes rebate programs to fire-affected communities to facilitate the rebuilding process.

"This is a great opportunity for the Brumby government to demonstrate its support for those who are rebuilding after this disaster."
