Carneval Strings Sets The Tempo For Café Culture Series A dynamic, traditional string quartet will set the tempo for Café Culture Series 2009, with a performance by ‘Carneval Strings at 7.30pm on Sunday 1 March at the Tyers Hall. By Latrobe City - 25th February 2009 - Back to News Now in its tenth year, the subscription series program consists of four shows spread throughout the calendar year, each of which offers a special live experience.
Latrobe City’s coordinator performing arts and venues, Kathleen Roberts, said Carneval Strings presents a range of music from baroque and classical, seasoned with Latin American, lively 50s and 60s swing jazz style and European folk tunes.
"The essence and passion of Hungarian folk music becomes obvious as the two Hungarian violinists wander through the audience entertaining the listeners. The audience is guaranteed a knock out performance that combines sophistication and fun with some surprises," Ms Roberts said.
Curator of Café Culture Series 2009, Mary Souness, said the Carneval Strings performance would introduce classical music as part of the Café Culture Series for the first time in the history of the program.
"I think ‘Carneval Strings’ is the perfect choice for introducing classical music into the series as their repertoire also includes some very fiery Hungarian tunes and some beautifully performed 50s jazz. It’s a blissful combination the audience will hopefully enjoy immensely," Ms Souness said.
"Those who came to our last show in the 2008 series (Bric-a-Brac) have already had a taste of the calibre of musicianship to expect when they witnessed the vibrant violinist Atilla Kuti in action. Atilla and his wife Karoline (cello) perform in Carneval Strings with Camilla Murray also on violin and Zoltan Balázs on viola."
Ms Roberts said Café Culture Series 2009 would also feature a one-man comedy play ‘Last Drinks’ written and performed by Damian Callinan and directed by Matt Parkinson. Last Drinks features on Sunday 10 May at 7.30pm at the Latrobe Performing Arts Centre.
"The show had its debut at last year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival. It is a very impressive performance by Damian who convincingly portrays an array of characters at ‘The Criterion’ a pub in the inner suburbs of everywhere. There’s no pokies, no wine list and now, no customers! The Criterion has survived the wowsers, the yuppies, the health inspectors and the changing face of pub culture but one night the underworld wander in and set the fate of the pub onto a new trajectory."
Ms Roberts said the third show in the series, which features at 7.30pm on Sunday 9 August at the Tyers Hall, maintains the Aussie feel.
"‘Welcome Strangers’ is a super group of four consummate musicians brought together for the tour especially to present a mountain of quality material that is rarely or never performed in Australia.
"Their show features tenderly collected versions of all but lost rural Australian fiddle tunes. They capture a style that is uniquely Australian in feel and respectfully representative of the countless unknown and almost forgotten fiddlers of the rural Aussie culture," Ms Roberts said.
"Past subscribers will be familiar with the fact that we like to end the year on an energetic high, and the New Melbourne Jazz Band have got just the show to help us kick up our heels.
This wonderfully uplifting six piece band, which features at 7.30pm on Sunday 6 December at the Tyers Hall, plays swinging, foot-tapping, great to dance to Dixieland jazz. Their extensive repertoire includes music from traditional New Orleans, Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, Benny Goodman, Cole Porter, Duke Ellington and songs from the roaring twenties."
The Café Culture Series 2009 full program of quality entertainment is available now by purchasing a substantially discounted $60 season’s subscription ticket (a saving of $20), or tickets for individual performances can be purchased.
Tickets for performances are available from the Latrobe Performing Arts box office on 5176 3559 or email boxoffice@latrobe.vic.gov.au to secure your seat.
