Mayor puts Forward Council’s Transition Plans to TreasurerHere is a glimpse on some of the topics discussed by Mayor Michael Rossiter with the State Treasurer, Tim Pallas. Read on. By news@gippsland - 21st June 2016 - Back to News Latrobe City’s Mayor and CEO have advocated for a planned, respectful and coordinated transition to a low-carbon economy in a meeting with State Treasurer Tim Pallas last week [Wednesday 16 June 2016].
Mayor, Michael Rossiter met with Mr Pallas to:
- ensure the Latrobe Valley remains a firm focus for the State Government
- further discussions regarding the Economic Diversification and Transition Fund
- put forward Council’s preliminary concepts relating to its Transition Plan
"The Treasurer has a pleasing level of visibility over the Latrobe Valley and the challenges that face our community and economy.
"We discussed the need for long-term large scale investment in strategic infrastructure, such as the rail corridor, to underpin our transformation."
Council used the opportunity to reinforce its call for regionalisation of government agencies.
"Relocating government agencies, complete with their people and expenditure, is a proven strategy for reinvigorating and sustaining regional economies undergoing transformation.
"It’s been used to great effect in Geelong and we remain firm in our resolve that this strategy could also be useful in cushioning our transition away from carbon intensive industry.
"We further discussed our desire for an Innovation and Education Precinct to support our community in building the skills for the future.
The Mayor reports that the Treasurer was also interested to discuss council’s Economic Development Strategy, highlighting its strong alignment with the State Government’s aspirations for food, fibre and training.
