Transport Minister Snubs Valley

Public Transport Minister Lynne Kosky has turned her back on the Latrobe Valley, ignoring a request for an urgent meeting with the Traralgon CBD Safety Committee to save the local NightRider program.

By Russell Northe - 12th August 2009 - Back to News

The snub comes hot on the heels of the minister’s attempts to downgrade Latrobe rail services to improve travel conditions for metropolitan passengers.

Following the completion of a TAC-funded trial and with concerns about the future of the service without ongoing finances, the Nationals’ Member for Morwell Russell Northe wrote to the Brumby government minister on 19 June, seeking an urgent meeting with a delegation of committee members before interim funds run out.

"Forty five days later and despite numerous calls I have personally made to her office, Minister Kosky is still ignoring the committee’s pleas to be heard in person on a matter squarely in her portfolio," Mr Northe said today.

"Interim funds generously provided by RoadSafe Latrobe and Linking Latrobe Transport Connections run out Saturday week and without permanent funding, the prospect of a continued local NightRider service looks grim.

"The committee have requested an opportunity to brief Minister Kosky on the many benefits of the service and I have offered to facilitate such a meeting either locally or in Parliament for the Minister’s convenience," the Morwell MP explained.

"The Minister’s failure to respond only further demonstrates Labor’s arrogance and lack of genuine interest in our region."
