Party time, Cuban style at Moe Town HallThe final concert in the Café Concert Series 2006 to be held on Sunday 5 November will see the Moe Town Hall rocking into party mode, Cuban style! By Latrobe City Council - 25th October 2006 - Back to News Sally Ford and the Pachuco Playboys is a seven piece band presenting classics from the Cuban repertoire with a shot of NuYoRican Latin soul from the swinging sixties.
As leaders of ‘Texicali Rose’ from the Café Concert Series 2000 Sally Ford and Patrick Cronin produced two award winning albums of home grown tex-mex, mariachi and tejano blues. Since then, Sally Ford and Patrick Cronin have gathered together some of Melbourne’s finest roots and Latin musicians to form the Pachuco Playboys (pachuco means flashy, sharp, snappy dresser in Spanish.)
Latrobe City’s performing arts and venues co-ordinator, Kathleen Roberts said that the Pachuco Playboys played the roots of salsa music . . . son montuno, boogaloo and cha cha cha.
"With a dream rhythm section of Chris Lesser on piano, Sam Willoughby on double bass and Lliam Freeman on guitar, the Pachuco Playboys thrive on an intuitive groove. Underpinning the sounds are two of Australia’s most experienced and respected Latin percussionists Felipe Cornejo and Sebastian Orellana," Ms Roberts explained.
"Add to this Sally Ford’s powerful bel canto vocal style, her soaring flute and alto sax combined with the soulful sounds of Patrick Cronin’s trumpet and you have one of the most danceable party feel Latin acts around," Ms Roberts said.
"Over the course of a few years the band managed to get into the recording studio to record some of the tracks that they were performing live at festivals and other gigs around the country. The result became a CD named ‘Sol de Abril’. The highlight of this classy CD is a track that inspired the album title, Dragon’s April Sun in Cuba.
"The Pachucos give this Australian classic a thorough Cuban workover. Sally leads the original lyric through a steamy piano-led montuno pattern into a final verse in Spanish before the band take it home with a salsa-infused jam," Ms Roberts added.
"Treat yourself, book your ticket now to ensure your seat for what promises to be a wonderful end to the year," Ms Roberts concluded.
Sally Ford and the Pachuco Playboys will be performing live at the Moe Town Hall on Sunday 5 November 2006 from 7.30pm. Tickets are available from the Box Office on 5176 3559.
