Traralgon’s sound shell in Victory Park has moved a step closer with tenders now being advertised for the design.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins, said the need for a sound shell in Traralgon had been acknowledged for many years and the concept had now reached the stage where the sound shell would be part of Victory Park’s environment by Christmas, or at the latest by Easter 2002.

Cr Jenkins said a working group of Allan Vickery from the Traralgon Lions Club, Councillors Bond and Proctor, and Latrobe’s Recreation Services Unit Leader, David Martyn, were now assessing suitable siting, and design concepts.

Traralgon Lions Club Member, Alan Vickery, said aspects to be considered included the size of the structure and its practical application, any vulnerability to flooding from Traralgon Creek, how it could complement the environment, and ways of keeping any vandalism to a minimum.

"At last the sound shell is a real goer. It’s the realisation of an ambition fostered by the Traralgon Lions Club for many years, and before that, the Rotary Club. It means the Traralgon City Band will be able to hold concerts in the Park, and we will be able to attract touring orchestras," Mr Vickery said.

"Most of all, this is a facility that the community will benefit from. School break-up concerts can be facilitated, there can be movies in the Park, light opera functions, and we believe it will completely revitalise Traralgon’s Music in the Park.

"The Lions Club has already made a financial contribution to this project, and Latrobe City Council has also made a generous grant. In particular we also acknowledge the State Government’s contribution through the Latrobe Valley Tasforce, which has given the project a much needed boost.

"We are especially pleased with the public input from the consultation process with the community, and in particular through the Youth Leadership Program. Traralgon’s sound shell will be a result of listening to the needs of community user groups and delivering a facility that will meet those needs," Mr Vickery added.
