Cycling In For A Great RaceCycling teams and riders from New Zealand, New Caledonia and Malaysia are among the 150 plus competitors who will compete in the Tour of Gippsland in July. By Bass Coast - 15th July 2011 - Back to News Acting Director of Community and Economic Development, Antoinette Mitchell, explained that the cycling program is locked in and is a significant benefit for Bass Coast. "Events such as this are not only a great spectacle for locals they bring in a significant economic benefit to the region," said Ms Mitchell. "Around 300 people will be staying in Bass Coast for two nights and the criteriums are expected to attract over 1,000 spectators into the centre of Wonthaggi and San Remo."

The 520 km Tour kicks off with a criterium in Wonthaggi at 11.00am on Wednesday, 27 July and finishes in Paynesville on 31 July. Commencing between the library and the police station in Watt Street the criterium will be 30 laps of a circuit and will take in Bilson, Baillieu and McKenzie Streets. A road race will leave the Wonthaggi Recreation Reserve at 2.15pm and travel through the town to Cape Paterson, Inverloch and Outtrim before returning to the Rec Reserve by around 4.00pm.
A second criterium will take place in San Remo at 11.00am on Thursday, 28 July beginning in Marine Parade between Wynne Avenue and Bergin Grove. This will be 20 laps of a circuit around Bergin Grove, Ocean Grove, Davis Point and Back Beach Roads. The Tour will leave San Remo at 1.30pm and head to Warragul via Kilcunda, Archies Creek and Korumburra.
Street Closures and Traffic Event organisers will make every effort to minimise the impact to traffic and the community. Traffic marshals will control all intersections and approaches to the criterium circuits and there will be a significant police traffic operation with the road race stages. Ms Mitchell appealed to residents and motorists to be aware of road closures and changed traffic conditions during the road race stages. "We also ask people to be patient on the roads and obey the directions of traffic marshals and police," said Ms Mitchell. Properties affected by the street closures will receive a letter to advise them of the changed conditions.
Closures in Wonthaggi – Wednesday, 27 July Watt Street will be closed to traffic between McBride Avenue and the Police Station between 9.00am and 12.30pm. The Criterium Circuit of Watt, Bilson, Baillieu and McKenzie Street will be closed to traffic between 10.30am until midday. Cars cannot be parked on these streets during these times. Korumburra Road will be closed between the Recreation Reserve entrance and Beard Street between 3.00pm and 4.15pm.
Closures in San Remo – Thursday, 28 July Marine Parade will be closed from approximately 50 metres each side of Edgar Road between 9.00am and 12.30 pm. The Criterium Circuit - Marine Parade, Bergin Grove, Ocean Grove, Davis Point Road and Back Beach Road will be closed to traffic between 10.30 am and midday. Cars cannot be parked on these streets during these times.
