Round 11 Baseball: Redsox On TopThe Edison Mission Energy Latrobe Valley Baseball Association continued last Sunday with round eleven games. By Latrobe Valley Baseball Association - 4th July 2001 - Back to News The Edison Mission Energy Latrobe Valley Baseball Association continued last Sunday with round eleven games. In A grade Sale hosted Traralgon and the Moe/Newborough Dodgers travelled to Morwell to take on the Cougars.
The Traralgon Redsox travelled to Sale to meet the Rangers in a battle for top spot on the ladder. In perfect conditions, the Redsox came out with spirits high and with Brad Pratt leading from the mound would be tough to defeat. The game was tight early with both teams struggling to convert runners into runs on the board. A costly error by Sale in the third dig allowed Luke Hornstra to score Traralgon’s first run and a two-out rally with hits from Mark Seeber and Davis Long finished the dig with four runs across the plate. Fielding errors from both sides meant runners got to bases, but the Redsox stayed in front for the remainder of the game. A crucial play by Mark Seeber taking a great fly in the outfield left bases loaded and saved certain runs from being added to Sale’s score as the Redsox won 10-6.
Sale continued their good form in B grade winning 8-3. The Rangers batted the ball extremely effectively in the first two digs to jump to an early lead 5-0. The Redsox fought back strongly and added three runs in the next two digs to tighten the game up. A great double play by Wells Humphrey and good back-up fielding kept Sale scoreless in their next two digs. The Rangers steadied and added three more runs late while keeping Traralgon scoreless. Best players for Traralgon were Wells Humphrey, Ross Brooker and Scott Pollerd.
The C grade game saw victory to Traralgon in a close contest 14-13. Peter O’Callaghan was the driving force behind the win, with a grand slam home run that bought in another three runs. He followed this up with another home run late in the game that was instrumental in the victory. Support came from Terry Cox, Wells Humphrey, Graham Estcourt and Steve O’Callaghan who had three hits each.
Sale beat a fast finishing Traralgon in the under 18’s, 11-9. Sale scored an amazing seven runs in their opening dig and looked like running away with the contest. The Redsox kept fighting and with more time may have pulled off an unlikely victory. Best players for the Redsox were James Cross, Travis Hemming and Luke Hornsta. In the under 16’s, Sale defeated Traralgon 6-2.
Across in Morwell the Dodgers arrived determined to come away with a victory. Moe/Newborough jumped Morwell early and never look back taking the game 18-1 in a convincing performance. Tim Wilson had four hits and Heath Warren hit two huge home runs for the Dodgers. Nine runs in the third dig including a homer by Warren that bought in three runs gave the Dodgers control of the game. Brendon Date controlled Morwell’s batters with seven strikeouts. The Dodgers also accounted for the Cougars in the B grade game. This weekend, Sale will host the Victorian Provincial Baseball Championships on behalf of the Edison Mission Energy Latrobe Valley Baseball Association. Due to the number of teams participating in the Championships the event will be held over two venues, Stephenson Park and the Sale Oval. The final will be held on at 1:30 PM on Sunday at Stephenson Park. This years Latrobe Valley representative team enters the championship full of confidence after winning the previous years event in the under 16 age group. The championship begins on Saturday and the public is urged to come down to the grounds and support their team, as it takes on some of the Victoria’s best.
