Locals urged to be vigilant when purchasing event tickets online

Member for Morwell Russell Northe has warned consumers in the Latrobe Valley and wider Gippsland region to be wary when buying tickets to events online this summer.

By Portal Admin - 13th January 2017 - Back to News

Mr Northe was recently approached by a local resident who purchased two Big Bash Twenty20 cricket tickets for nearly four times the face value of the tickets.

"The resident purchased his tickets online and unwittingly ended up paying substantially more than intended including significant booking and handling fees," Mr Northe said.

"What should have cost the consumer approximately $45 ended up costing him nearly $160.

"To rub salt into the wound the patron received two tickets in the name of an unknown person and has no idea the validity of the tickets he received."

Mr Northe said it appears that some opportunistic organisations are acquiring a bulk number of tickets at popular matches and events, and then on selling them at a substantially higher price and in many cases to vulnerable consumers.

"It's important that consumers are extremely vigilant when securing tickets online to major events across Victoria," Mr Northe said.

Concerns can be reported to Consumer Affairs Victoria on 1300 558 181.
