2008 Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing AwardThe 2008 Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award, or JADA, currently on show at the Latrobe Regional Gallery, features a who’s who of Australian Artists representing every state in Australia By Latrobe City Council - 5th February 2010 - Back to News The exhibition of over 40 drawings includes representational work, large scale and miniature.
Latrobe City’s arts director, Julie Adams, said JADA documents the talent and scope of artists working in this much loved and timeless medium, and features a drawing to suit every taste.
"Whether stylized abstraction or a technically fastidious representation of our world, or the most bizarre manifestations of the imagination - drawing has had the power to induce awed responses from audiences since time immemorial."
The 2008 JADA major prize was awarded to John Philippides for his drawing entitled ‘Portrait 2’. The work is a portrait of the artist’s mother who has been the subject of many of John’s works.
The judge of the 2008 JADA, Hendrick Kolenberg, senior curator of Australian Prints, Drawings and Watercolours at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, said there is something indefinable about this drawing. "It is strong and obsessive. But most of all, it truly captures the essence of the subject in all her uniqueness."
The 2008 Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award, a Grafton Regional Gallery touring exhibition, continues until 14 March.
Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Monday to Friday 10am-5pm, and on weekends 11am–4pm. The gallery is closed public holidays. Entry is free.
