Sharing the Vision

A “vision” for the future of Phillip Island and San Remo will be on display at Cowes and San Remo

A "vision" for the future of Phillip Island and San Remo will be on display at Cowes and San Remo from 10 January until 3 February 2002. The vision has been put together by residents, ratepayers and visitors to the area.

"The vision forms part of the Phillip Island and San Remo Design Framework Project," said Cr Miranda Sage, Mayor of Bass Coast Shire Council. "The vision is on display so people can consider and comment about it."

Cr Sage explained that the purpose of the Design Framework Project is to establish a vision for the future of Phillip Island and San Remo and an outline for achieving that vision.

Over the past six months the project team has been working extensively with the community to identify what people believe makes the area unique as well as the aspects that need to be protected and enhanced. Consultation included student exhibition, focus group sessions and culminated in a convention in December 2001.

The project team has collated all the feedback and input, and have prepared a vision that encapsulates the key issues that were raised. This vision document will be on display in Cowes on the corner of Chapel Street and Thompson Avenue and at San Remo in the foreshore area.

"This is your opportunity to consider the vision and provide the project team with comments about whether you agree or disagree with the visions that have been posed," said Cr Sage. "It’s important to note that this is just the draft, so your input is essential to make sure the final version truly reflects the feelings and ideas of the community."

After the exhibition period, the Project Team will consider all submissions and refine the vision. The next stage of this project will be to make this vision a reality.

This will involve developing clear design guidelines for development and land use, as well as a 20-year action plan. The action plan will detail specific projects that can be undertaken in both the short and long term to achieve this vision.

In addition, and very importantly, the project will also identify the various sources of funding available to help implement these actions. It is anticipated that this will be completed by late March 2002 and again the Project Team will be calling on the community for their ideas and views.
