National Archery Championships coming to MorwellThe 59th National Archery Championships are coming to Morwell next year, with competitors from all over Australasia expected to take part. By Latrobe City Council - 12th April 2005 - Back to News Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed, said that the event would be hosted by the Twin City Archers Gippsland Inc at Toners Lane, Morwell.
"This is the first time the Championships have been held in Gippsland, in fact, it is a first for regional Victoria. We are anticipating around 220 competitors will take part in the championships, being held from 22 to 30 April 2006. As well as representatives from clubs from all over Australia, there are competitors from New Zealand, Tonga, Fiji and other pacific island nations expected to compete," Cr Lougheed said.
"Archery is well represented in Gippsland with a number of clubs operating in the area. Twin City Archers has several competitors expected to do well. Peter Bennett, President of the club, has previously won gold and World Masters, Australian Masters’ Games and state championships. Merv Grinstead, Secretary of the club will compete in the veterans section and has previously taken gold at state level, silver at Australian Masters’ Games and bronze at state level," Cr Lougheed explained.
Peter Bennett said that there were a number of different types of bow used in competition archery, along with different categories of shooting.
"There are four bows used in competition. Compound, Olympic recurve, longbow and crossbow. Competitors also take part in different types of events: target archery where the targets are static at set distances; field archery where the targets are different heights and sizes; clout which is long range shooting and match-play which is time-based scoring," Mr Bennett explained.
Cr Lougheed added that the event would mean a tremendous economic boost to the area in terms of accommodation, tourism and retail spending.
"We are hoping to attract many visitors over the course of the championships, both local and from interstate and overseas. It is the ideal opportunity to showcase Latrobe City and surrounds and ensure that visitors and competitors enjoy their stay and want to come back," Cr Lougheed concluded.
