Pet Registration Deadline Looms

The heartache of losing a pet and never finding it again is all too well known by many Victorian families.

By Latrobe City Council - 23rd March 2010 - Back to News

Yet by simply registering your cat or dog, you are greatly improving the chances of your animal being returned to you if it is found wearing its council identification marker.

Latrobe City’s acting manager legislative compliance, Peter Fraser, said that registration not only makes sense in terms of pet security but is also a requirement under the law across Victoria. Every cat and dog aged three months and over must be registered with the local council.

"Owners must renew their pet’s registration by 10 April 2010 to avoid a fine. Pets being registered for the first time must also be microchipped prior to registration. Local veterinary practices provide a microchipping service, and it is a minor, pain-free procedure that can potentially save a lot of heartache.

"It is important to remember also that your registration fee gives you more than just a lost and found service. In addition to a council identification marker and a pound service, registration fees fund services to remove wandering and aggressive dogs from the streets, so you and your pet can walk in safety as well as services to deal with nuisance problems like barking dogs, cat trespass and unowned animals," Mr Fraser explained.

"Animal management officers control dangerous, menacing and restricted breed dogs so they do not pose a threat to the community, along with monitoring animal welfare standards in pet shops, kennels, catteries, breeding and training businesses.

"There are education programs for the general community and for children in preschools and primary schools and research into dog and cat welfare and control issues, including dog attack prevention," Mr Fraser said.

"Fees for first-time registrations or renewals are $30 ($15 concession) provided the animal is microchipped and desexed. Notices will be issued during March," Mr Fraser concluded.
