Young adults urged to immuniseResidents aged between 18-34 are encouraged to take advantage of free vaccinations By Bass Coast Shire Council - 30th November 2001 - Back to News Bass Coast Shire residents aged between 18-34 are encouraged to take advantage of free measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccinations.
A recent outbreak of measles among young adults in Melbourne is being investigated by the Department of Human Services. Seven young adult Melbournians have been diagnosed with measles since October. All but one were hospitalised for specialist treatment.
Bass Coast Shire Council’s health staff provide the free MMR vaccinations during monthly immunisation sessions in Coronet Bay, Cowes, San Remo, Wonthaggi and Inverloch.
Miranda Sage, Mayor of Bass Coast Shire Council said that it is essential that young adults who missed out on childhood vaccinations and did not catch the diseases in childhood now take precautions.
"It is very important that 18-34 year olds take advantage of the free immunisation sessions because these diseases are highly contagious and can be very serious in adults," said Cr Sage.
"I encourage residents between 18-34 to take the time to attend one of Council’s free immunisation session," said Cr Sage. "No appointment is necessary."
