Backing a Bright Future for Morwell
Completion of the Morwell CBD Revitalisation project.
The series of Victorian and Federal Government-funded projects known as Future Morwell are complete after the final brick was placed in a major streetscape redevelopment of Morwell CBD.
Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing today welcomed completion of the Morwell CBD Revitalisation project – creating a brighter future for the Morwell community and positioning it as the Town of Gardens.
The set of four projects started in 2014 with funding from the Bushfire Economic Recovery Fund and have been an opportunity to reshape the town’s identity by investing in infrastructure, outdoor spaces and natural assets and events.
In addition to the Urban Design and Beautification Project, initiatives that received Victorian Government support through Future Morwell include a campaign to promote the town as a destination for tourism and investment, along with an events project to reposition Morwell as the ‘Town of Gardens’, and a Morwell City Entrance Project.
The combined results are expected to have a significant positive impact on the town’s economy once coronavirus travel restrictions are eased, strengthening visitation for events like the Morwell International Rose Garden Festival, which brings thousands of visitors to the town each year.
Another outcome of the Urban Design project will be the integration of smart city technologies, including smart street lighting, wireless phone charging, free public Wi-Fi and a people counting sensor to monitor activation in the street.
Future Morwell has been funded in part from the Victorian Government through Regional Development Victoria and the Latrobe Valley Authority and has been delivered by the Latrobe City Council in partnership with the Future Morwell Committee.
The completion of the Future Morwell project is one of several Victorian Government investments to revitalise the town and wider Latrobe Valley region. Other major projects include the Hi Tech Precinct – Innovation Centre and the TAFE redevelopment at Morwell, the Latrobe Valley GovHub, up to 300 new free car spaces, the expansion of the Latrobe Regional Hospital, new primary, specialist development and secondary schools and upgrades, and new and upgraded sporting facilities.
Quote attributable to Member for Eastern Victorian Harriet Shing MP
"Future Morwell has been a long time coming and the community has been incredibly patient throughout construction. Now we get to celebrate the result which is a rejuvenated town centre that acknowledges Morwell’s past while building on our present – and just in time for spring."
Quote attributable to Latrobe City Council Mayor Cr Dan Clancey
"For a town that’s long been the power source for the state, it’s fitting that Morwell is one of the first towns in regional Victoria to boast smart technology on its streets. These works will help businesses and encourage the community to use the new public spaces, further adding to the strong sense of community that exists in Morwell."
