LVBA Round 13 action: Redsox Sweep CougarsThe Edison Mission Energy Latrobe Valley Baseball Association continued last Sunday with round thirteen games By Latrobe Valley Baseball Association - 17th July 2001 - Back to News The Edison Mission Energy Latrobe Valley Baseball Association continued last Sunday with round thirteen games. In the main games Traralgon travelled to Morwell and game out convincing winners, while Moe/Newborough Dodgers accounted for the Churchill Braves.
The wintry conditions didn’t slow Traralgon down as they came out with guns blazing against the Morwell Cougars winning all five games played. They controlled the A grade game from start to finish scoring an incredible twelve runs in their opening dig. Fielding errors did not help the Cougars as they struggled to keep the Redsox batters on base. Owen Godenzi drove in four of those runs with two home runs, the first over the right field fence, and the second over the left. John Kus was able to keep Morwell scoreless through consistent pitching and relentless team fielding. A short rain delay did not slow Traralgon as they added six runs in the forth innings. Brad Prat, Luke Hornstra and Godenzi were the stars with the bat in a totally dominant performance by the Redox winning 24-0.
In B grade the Redsox prevailed 14-4. Traralgon started strongly but Morwell was able to reply capitalizing on fielding errors. Traralgon was then able to gain the ascendency through good batting and pitching by Steve O’Callaghan. Steve Cox came in late to finish off for O’Callaghan and had four strikeouts from five batters. Ross Brooker had three hits for the Redsox.
Both teams began slowly in the C grade contest until the Redsox took control in the third dig. A rain delay didn’t halt proceedings as the Redsox continued on strongly and won 14-0. The under 14 game saw Traralgon win 15-3. Matt McLean had two safe hits and Jarrod Wilhelme had one. Kate Neave also got bat on ball in a strong team performance. For the under 12’s, Megan Griffiths and Frank Albanese each had a single safe hit. Good base running was a highlight of this match, and all players were swinging the bat hard.
Over in Moe/Newborough, Churchill went to an early lead 1-0. The Dodgers rallied quickly and scored four runs by the second dig after a home run to Noel Tobias. It rained home runs in the third dig as Heath Warren hit one out of the park for the Dodgers and Daniel Bennett did likewise for the Braves. The Dodgers extended their lead to 7-3 with two more runs in the fifth. Moe/Newborough blew the game open in the seventh dig scoring seven runs that included a home run by Tim Wilson and led 14-3 when bad light ended play at the bottom of the eighth.
The B grade game was close with the Dodgers winning 11-6. Churchill was in control early and led 4-1 after two innings helped by some sloppy fielding by the Dodgers. The Dodgers answered with the bat adding five runs over the next two digs to narrowly lead 6-5. Churchill then levelled the scored in the top of the sixth 6-6. The game was decided late when the Dodgers came home with five runs in the bottom half of the inning to run out victors.
In the other games Moe/Newborough won C grade 20-6, the braves won the under 18’s 13-3, and accounted for the Dodgers 17-5 in the under 14 competition. The Moe/Newborough Baseball Club Ball has had a date change to the 4th August. It is a fundraising night with wine and cheese and other activities. It will be held at the Burrage Reserve Pavilion, contact the club for further details.
The action continues this Sunday in the Edison Mission Energy Latrobe Valley Baseball Association with round fourteen games. The Sale Rangers host Morwell, Moe/Newborough travels to Yarram to take on the Stealers and Traralgon takes on Churchill. The public is welcome.
