Baton Celebrations Spread Far And WideLocal communities across the Shire will be cheering on their nominated community members as they carry the baton in the Sunday 20 November Bass Coast Baton Relay. By Bass Coast Shire - 14th November 2005 - Back to News Townships across the Shire will be holding celebrations as part of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games as the baton passes through.
Council’s Arts and Leisure Coordinator, Jenny Churchill, encouraged the community to attend their local celebrations and support the community members and groups being recognised.
"Over 130 nominated individuals and groups will be participating, which works out to be around 500 community members.
"This is the biggest event of this type that Bass Coast Shire Council has ever undertaken," said Ms Churchill.
The celebrations will kick off in Wishart Reserve, Wonthaggi at 7am on the Sunday morning with a barbeque breakfast and a blessing of the baton.
Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games gold and silver medallist, Linda Ryan, will hold the baton at the starting line.
The baton will then travel through Dalyston, Archies Creek, Kilcunda, San Remo and Cape Woolamai to Cowes. It will be greeted in Cowes by over 100 school children cheering on local basketball identity, David Bogle, and the likes of Paralympic swimming gold medallist, Amanda Drennan, and 1956 and 1960 Olympian Merv Lincoln.
Rhyll, Bass, Coronet Bay and Corinella are next on the baton’s list. From 1-3.30pm Grantville Memorial Park will host community celebrations including go-carts, a jumping castle, sausage sizzle and bootscooting.
The baton’s travels will continue through Pioneer Bay, Kernot, Krowera, Glen Alvie, Inverloch, Cape Paterson before returning to Wonthaggi for the Baton Twighlight Festival being held at the Wonthaggi State Coal Mine from 5.30pm.
Celebrations being hosted by the Mine include performances by the Wonthaggi Citizens Band and Circle P Bootscooters, a Wonthaggi Show Society Display with animals as well as an exhibition by the Wonthaggi Theatrical Group and a sausage sizzle provided by the Lions Club.
Those unable to attend on the day can get hourly updates on the Baton’s progress on Radio 3MFM – frequency 88.1, 89.5 or 89.1 FM.
