Preschools praised for ‘Smiles for Miles’ programFive local preschools were recognised recently for their efforts in targeting the dental health of their students in the pilot program ‘Smiles for Miles’. By Latrobe City - 10th February 2006 - Back to News At a ceremony held at the council chamber in the Traralgon civic precinct; certificates were presented by Latrobe City mayor Cr Lisa Price, and Joan Shortt from Dental Health Services Victoria, to representatives from the Cameron Street, Carinya, Glendonald Park, Moe Heights, and Parklands preschools; which all participated in the ‘Smiles for Miles’ program in 2005.
Cr Price said that the educational program presented by the preschools concentrated on improving the dental health of preschool age children by encouraging drinking water, healthy eating and regular brushing.
"By targeting children at such a young age through the preschool program, our young people are given a great start in their lives towards adopting a healthy attitude to their teeth," Cr Price said.
"The success was measured by the completion of lunch box surveys, twice during the year, and comparing lunch and snack items brought into preschools. Overall, the program was such a success, that the program’s philosophies are now planned to be integrated throughout the Latrobe Cities Preschool program.
"Latrobe City is proud of its state-wide renowned quality preschool program, and congratulates all preschool staff on consistently doing such a fantastic job," Cr Price said.
"The health of our young children is vital, and we are extremely proud of the preschools enthusiastic participation in this program and its great success, which would not have been possible without the support which was received from the community," Cr Price added.
A special thank you was made to Dr Tuhuy Tran, Dr Jacob Varughese, and Dr Graham Berrett who in collaboration with Latrobe City, helped sponsor drink bottles for the children attending preschool in 2006.
