Prepare For Emergencies

An event to showcase Bass Coast’s Emergency Services and help residents prepare themselves for an emergency will be held on Sunday, 4 October, at the San Remo Foreshore Reserve.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 25th September 2009 - Back to News

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Municipal Emergency Coordinator, James Bremner, said one of the main aims of the day was to ensure residents were best prepared for an emergency.

"We want our community to feel empowered and confident they can help themselves by being best prepared to deal with an emergency situation," said Mr Bremner.

"A key outcome of the fires and floods that devastated areas earlier this year was the importance of community resilience and preparedness to how well a community recovered.

"We can’t necessarily control the type or magnitude of the emergency we might face, but we can control how well prepared we are to deal with that emergency."

Mr Bremner said the primary role of Victoria's emergency service agencies was to respond with trained personnel and specialised equipment to urgent requests for assistance from the public.

Ambulance Victoria’s Mal McCann agreed, but said emergency services had an equally important role in raising public awareness of safe behaviour in potentially hazardous situations.

"In an emergency such as a fire, storm or flood, Victorian government agencies, local government, volunteer organisations and communities work together to respond, to save lives and to save property," said Mr McCann.

The information day will include displays from the CFA, Ambulance Victoria, SES, Victoria Police and other emergency services agencies.

"Rotary, Lions clubs and community groups play a vital role by providing volunteer assistance and by fundraising for emergency services," continued Mr McCann.

The event will run from 10.00am to 3.00pm at the San Remo Foreshore Reserve on Sunday, 4 October. For more information please contact James Bremner on 1300 BCOAST (226 278).
