Get to know ‘The Band Who Knew Too Much’ at Morwell

The Band Who Knew Too Much will wind up the program for the 2005 Café Concert Series with their high energy, sometimes tongue in cheek, sometimes in your face, fun concert at The Chapel, Morwell on Sunday 6 November.

Latrobe City’s Performing Arts and Venues Co-ordinator, Kathleen Roberts, said that the band had been based around Melbourne for the past fifteen years in one form or another.

"Way back in the early days around 1990, Dave Evans, founder, singer, songwriter and accordion player for the band used to busk with a guitarist at the Victoria Market. Pretty soon, he linked up with Andy Reid who contributed his voice and clarinet playing skills.

"A couple of pub gigs later the band acquired the obligatory bass player and collected a trombone player too just for good measure and by 1994 the line up had grown organically then settled and has remained the same ever since apart from the departure of the trombonist," Ms Roberts explained.

"Much to their credit, The Band Who Knew Too Much decided that the rest of the world needed an opportunity to hear their music and in 1994 they headed off to test the waters in the USA, UK and parts of Western Europe. They spent most of their time successfully busking at tourist hot spots," Ms Roberts added.

"The band has a definite high energy, grass roots, earthy feel to their music. They set out predominately to provide a fun night of music for their audience through their original story telling style of music. Through their music you can hear tales about spent rent, hard rubbish night, parking fines, beer o’clock and crazy people," Ms Roberts said.

Ms Roberts said that the band was difficult to pigeon hole musically.

"They have flavours of folk, roots, jazz and ska in their repertoire, but the lines between the styles are favourably blurred. This quality in their music is particularly appealing to festivals both here and overseas. The band has sat comfortably on the program of festivals like Port Fairy Folk Festival, Apollo Bay Music Festival, Queenscliff Music Festival and Copenhagen International Jazz Festival as well as Wangaratta Jazz Festival," Ms Roberts said.

"The band also suffers from people never quite being able to get the band name right. They have been known as ‘The Band THAT knew Too Much’, ‘The Band Who Knew Two Chords’, ‘The Band Who Played Too Much’, ‘The Band Who Drank Too Much’, and you can add your own to the list.

"One thing is certain though. Whatever you call them and wherever they play, The Band Who Knew Too Much has anyone within earshot smiling from ear to ear, unconsciously foot tapping and more often than not, up dancing," Ms Roberts said.

Courtesy of Arts Victoria, Just Shows To Go and Latrobe City, ‘The Band Who Knew Too Much’ will be appearing on Sunday 6 November at The Chapel, Morwell at 7.30pm. Tickets are on sale now at the Latrobe City Box Office on 5176 3559.
