Letter To The Editor

Recent floods impacting Queensland, New South Wales and vast areas of Victoria along with fires in Western Australia have been devastating for many individuals and communities.

By Russell Northe - 19th January 2011 - Back to News

The destruction has been substantial and loss of life terrible. Our hearts go out to those who have suffered as a result of these dreadful events.

The Gippsland community as always has rallied and offered generous support to those in their time of need. Many are conscious of the fact that our community benefited from the generosity of so many Australians during the horrendous bushfires of late January and Black Saturday in 2009 and are wishing to give something back in return.

It is also a very timely reminder that recent major floods and fires in Australia may trigger traumatic memories of many locals who were impacted by the 2009 bushfires. With the 2 year anniversary of the 2009 bushfires imminent I ask family and friends of those impacted by the fires to be conscious of the feelings and emotions of these persons.

It’s important to put an arm around one another at these difficult times and know that recovery is still occurring for many individuals and families. So at this difficult and traumatic time for many Australians please don’t forget those around you who likewise might be suffering as a result of previous events.
