Three-Day Clean Up Australia Program Set To StartThe serious business of cleaning up Australia is about to start with three special days allocated to various areas of responsibility. By East Gippsland Shire Council - 15th February 2006 - Back to News The program kicks off with ‘Business Clean Up Day’ on Tuesday, 28 February.
This will be followed by the ‘School's Clean Up Day’ on Friday 3 March, then the main day for the community at large, ‘Clean Up Australia Day’ on Sunday 5 March 2006.
East Gippsland Shire’s group manager community Kate Nelson said the program had become an important part of the annual calendar.
"Community response has been excellent and the results have done wonders for many parts of the landscape including beaches, parks, rivers, lakes and roadsides," she said.
"It is particularly important that we maintain the high level of community involvement, especially given that Aussies are among the highest producers of waste, per person, in the world."
Mayor Cr Jane Rowe said that cigarette butts were among the greatest curse in the Australian litter mix.
"An estimated seven billion cigarette butts end up in Australian waterways, streets and parklands each year, not to mention the 80 million plastic bags that become litter," she said.
"I urge everyone to lend a hand through the Clean Up Australia program and use it is an opportunity to develop a community spirit and attitude dedicated to keeping the landscapes of East Gippsland free from the unsightly curse of litter."
Cr Rowe said that there was also a growing problem with electronic waste from computers and other inexpensive devices that are considered expendable."
Groups can register online at www.cleanup.com.au or by calling 1800 282 329 and will be provided with clean up kits, which include bags, gloves and other materials.
Kate Nelson said there was also an opportunity for groups to register for a Commonwealth Games Clean Up - a special effort in preparation for the Commonwealth Games.
"It would be great if groups from Lakes Entrance, Bairnsdale, Orbost and Cann River participated in this activity and conduct the clean before the Queen's Baton Relay passed through these towns on 28 February," she said.
