The $500 prize was split two ways after both artists received 11 percent of the public vote, at the recent Baw Baw Shire Art Acquisition Exhibition.

"It’s exciting to see both up-and-coming and established artists, becoming involved in community initiatives like the Art Acquisition program," said council CEO Glenn Patterson.

"Our artists help contribute to the vibrancy of our community and projects like the Art Acquisition program give them the opportunity to display their works.

"The public response has been very encouraging," said Mr Patterson.

Christine enjoyed dual recognition for her piece entitled In Season.

As well as winning the peoples choice award, In Season was judged most outstanding art work of the exhibition by a panel of art experts, and was purchased for the shire’s permanent art collection.

Christine operates Serigraph Gallery in Neerim South, which displays creations from a number of local artists.

"It’s just amazing," said Ms Cochrane. "It’s fantastic the shire is supporting local artists, I couldn’t be more pleased."

Renee’s oil painting entitled Departure of the Aurora Australis proved to be a popular choice with visitors to the exhibition.

Renee is currently in her third year studying a Batchelor of Visual Arts at Monash University and has been painting since childhood.

She hopes to complete a Diploma of Education and become an art teacher in the Gippsland region.
