Gippsland › Latest news › Department of Sustainability and EnvironmentSeasonal Road Closures Help Protect State ForestThe winter closure of selected roads and tracks within State forests throughout the Gippsland region has been introduced following the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. By Department of Sustainability and Enviroment - 18th June 2007 - Back to News Roads and tracks are closed seasonally to protect track surfaces, water quality and the forest environment.
According to DSE Gippsland Forest Manager, Grange Jephcott, driver and public safety is also an important issue when determining which roads will be temporarily closed.
"Roads to be closed are scheduled each year by DSE after consultation with key user groups," Mr Jephcott said.
"The impact of the recent fires and loss of vegetation will increase the potential for land slips and water damage to roads and tracks."
This year the general closure period has been set from June 14 to November 1 with the option to extend the closures if required. Closed roads are marked by signs and in some cases gates.
Drivers who ignore the seasonal closures can face heavy fines. Parks Victoria also conducts similar seasonal road closures in areas of National Park which require protection.
Mr Jephcott said while many tracks and camping grounds remain open during winter, some are closed to allow for rehabilitation.
"DSE continually monitors State forest areas to ensure that the environment is protected in balance with the variety of recreational uses," he said.
"It is important during the wetter months, when the forest is most vulnerable to damage, that visitors stay on vehicle tracks at all times," Mr Jephcott said.
Across the state DSE manages 8.8 million hectares of public land, with one-third being State forest.
"Gippsland forests are popular destinations all year round for recreational activities including four-wheel driving, trail bike riding, walking, fishing, hunting and prospecting," Mr Jephcott said.
"We want to ensure the environment and road networks are protected while visitors experience the natural beauty of State forests in Gippsland."
