Gippsland › Latest news › Department of Sustainability and EnvironmentOpening Of The 2004 Stubble Quail Hunting SeasonSaturday the 3rd of April is the first day of Victoria’s Stubble Quail hunting season. By Department of Sustainability and Environment - 2nd April 2004 - Back to News Commencing this Saturday, hunters may shoot up to 20 Stubble Quail per day, until the season finishes on Wednesday the 30th June. Shooting hours are between 30 minutes before sunrise, to 30 minutes after sunset, for the whole of the season. Hunters are reminded that all other species of Quail, Snipe and other native birdlife are protected and must not be hunted.
Hunters are required to have a game licence endorsed for Game Birds, which they can obtain from the Department of Sustainability and Environment.
DSE Wildlife Officer Anthony Ball reminded hunters that it is important to obtain permission from landowners before attempting to hunt game on their property.
"We’ve had reports of some problems from landowners finding shooters illegally on their property in the past. This year Wildlife Officers and Police will be performing roving patrols and monitoring hunting activities around the quail hunting areas north of Traralgon," Mr Ball said.
Sgt Chris Pegg from the Traralgon Police said that if landowners see suspect people on their land, they should not confront them, but should ring Police and provide them with a description of the vehicle, its registration number and its location.
Landowners who find people trespassing on their property and suspect they are carrying firearms can report the situation to Police D24 via the emergency telephone number 000.
