Beauty abounds in Gallery exhibitionsThe ‘Delicate Beauties’ and ‘Ubiquitous Beauty’ exhibitions currently featuring at the newly refurbished Latrobe Regional Gallery are creating considerable interest among gallery visitors. By Latrobe City - 28th May 2003 - Back to News Latrobe Regional Gallery Curator, Vanessa McRae said that the two exhibitions portrayed a diversity of beauty and challenged people’s conceptions of beauty.
"‘Delicate Beauties’, a selection of 17th and 18th Century Japanese woodblock prints explores representations of women in Edo period Japan 1600-1868
"Images of female beauty provided a rich framework for Ukiyo-e artists who depicted both real and idealised representations of women," Ms McRae explained.
"The exhibition explores this major genre of the Ukiyo-e artists through images ranging from the famous "onnagata", male impersonators of the kabuki theatre, high-ranking courtesans in elaborate kimono through to domestic scenes of women in everyday activities,"
The ‘Delicate Beauties’ collection is part of the Allan Aldous bequest made to Latrobe Regional Gallery in 2001," Ms McRae said.
"The bequest forms the basis of the Gallery’s permanent collection of Asian Art, which includes objects from 17th Century Persian miniatures, 19th Century Chinese scrolls and ceramics to a significant number of Japanese woodblock prints," Ms McRae continued.
"In contrast to the delicate images of Asian art, the ‘Ubiquitous Beauty’ collection explores the multidimensional qualities of the Gippsland landscape," Ms McRae said.
"The images from day to day life such as the dairy cow and the abstracted geometry of Gippsland’s industrial icons, will appeal to many local residents. The exhibition takes you on a visual tour of the region using significant works by artists such as John Wolseley, Jan Senbergs, Mandy Martin, Anne Montgomery and Mike Brown," Ms McRae said.
"The contrasting beauty of our area is brought to life," Ms McRae concluded.
‘Delicate Beauties’ and ‘Ubiquitous Beauty’ are now open to the public until 27 July 2003.
The Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Tuesday to Friday 10am-5pm, and on weekends 11am–4pm. The gallery is closed Mondays and Public Holidays.
