Industry Must Be Involved In Apple Import ConsultationShadow Minister for Agriculture Philip Davis is encouraging the horticulture industry to comment on Biosecurity Australia’s draft Import Risk Analysis report, released today. By Philip Davis - 2nd December 2005 - Back to News Shadow Minister for Agriculture Philip Davis is encouraging the horticulture industry to comment on Biosecurity Australia’s draft Import Risk Analysis report, released today.
Mr Davis said the Liberal Party would examine the report very closely and seek input from Victorian industry.
"It is important to note that the draft report has been issued for comment – it is not a decision to allow the importation of New Zealand apples to Australia," Mr Davis said.
"The Victorian horticulture industry should take full advantage of the extended comment period of 120 days to make an assessment of the report and present its point of view.
"Comments will be welcome until 30 March 2006.
"The extended time period allows for farmers to thoroughly examine the report while going about their busy harvesting period."
Mr Davis said quarantine was a serious issue for Victoria’s primary industries, so it was important that everyone in the fresh food industry had a chance to express their view.
"If fire blight, European canker, apple leaf curling midge or leaf rollers were allowed to invade Victoria’s apple and pear industries, the results would be devastating," Mr Davis said.
"That is why farmers and Biosecurity Australia must take the issue extremely seriously and investigate the issues thoroughly before a final decision is made."
