Celebrating Our Sporting Past

The celebration at the Bass Hotel on Friday 9 July also marked the launch of the booklet Celebrating Our Sporting Past.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 17th July 2006 - Back to News

Celebrating Our Sporting Past is a publication produced by Council through a State Government grant as part of celebrations surrounding the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.

It began with an exhibition by Council of the region’s sporting and leisure photographs. Community members were then asked to choose one or more images from the exhibition and write an historical work on them. These could be in any form - story, essay, poetry or prose. The book Celebrating our Sporting Past is the result of this competition.

The writers from Celebrating Our Sporting Past were presented with certificates of appreciation by special guest Carol Atwell and Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Allan Bawden.

Mr Bawden said the inspiration and research behind the stories was fascinating.

"These stories provide a unique insight into our local history," said Mr Bawden.

The booklet starts with a story of a picnic, a day’s journey of Ford cars in 1919 and ends with a story of a day’s journey of a picnic to the Nobbies on the back of dray in 1929.

Other stories tell of the Kernot football club in 1913, a story of Almurta farmer rabbiting, Kingston Smith’s visit to Wonthaggi and how the Pine Lodge pool was built and its importance in Inverloch. Another story starts with an investigation into Miss Inverloch 1938 and ends with the story of the Inverloch cinema and go cart races.

These booklets will be distributed to schools, libraries and historical societies.

To view a copy of this book contact your local historical society, school, library or visit one of Council’s Customer Service Centres.
