Weedbuster weekWeedbuster Week provides an opportunity for the community to learn about and control environmental and agricultural weeds. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 10th October 2005 - Back to News As part of Weedbuster Week, Council will offer a number of incentives and public information forums on the topic.
Why weedbust?
"Environmental weeds threaten the conservation values of our natural areas," explains Derek Hibbert, Environmental Officer for Bass Coast Shire Council. "They are also a drain on public funds and resources."
Mr Hibbert goes on to explain there are similar issues with agricultural weeds.
"They have an impact on productivity, as well as threatening the conservation values of adjacent natural areas.
Weed incentive
In addition to providing information and services, Council is making an offer available to the community as an incentive to sort out weed problems in the garden.
In partnership with Bass Coast Landcare Network and Phillip Island Nature Park, Bass Coast Shire Council will provide urban residents with free indigenous plants as a reward for removing identified problem species from their gardens. Species include Bride Creeper, Cape Wattle, English Ivy and Mirror Bush.
The offer runs between 8 October and 30 November. Further information and application forms are available from:

Public Information Displays, conducted by Bass Coast Landcare Networks Community Pest Plant and Animal Officer, Matt Stephenson will take place at the following locations:
Cowes: Wednesday 12 October, 9 – 11 am, Chapel Street, outside Coles/Bakers Delight
Wonthaggi: Wednesday 12 October, 1 – 3 pm, Murray Street, outside Safeway
